IRPA EC Member Sigurdur Magnusson receives 2015 Bo Lindell Award

Sigurdur Magnusson, the recipient of the Bo Lindell Award 2015 and Mette Øhlenschlæger, president of the Nordic Society for Radiation Protectiton. 

 

Sigurður Magnusson, director of the Icelandic Radiation Safety Authority and a member of the IRPA Executive Council, received the Bo Lindell award at the Nordic Society´s conference in Roskilde, Denmark, on August 24th, 2015.

In her introduction the president of the Nordic Society, Mette Øhlenschlæger, said:

"According to the statues for the Bo Lindell Award the Board Members of the Nordic Society shall choose a person - as winner of the prize - who is recognized for his/hers great achievements through many years in radiation protection and in the radiation protection community and a person who in addition has promoted and worked intensively for the purpose of the Nordic Society through many years.

You can’t be surprised – a unanimous board representing all five Nordic countries has decided to award the director of the Icelandic Radiation Safety Authority Sigurdur Magnusson the Bo Lindell Award 2015.

The reason for giving the award to you Sigurdur is of course your work and engagement for 35 years in radiation protection in the Nordic family and other international cooperation. There is only time now for a brief overview of your contributions through 35 years. 

Regarding the Society you have served as president in two periods from 1994 – 1996 and 2008 – 2011 and have been active in very many IRPA foras latest as Member of the IRPA Executive Committee representing the Society. 

In the Nordic family you have been very active in NKS "The Nordic nuclear Safety Research" since 1985 – and since 2006 as chair of NKS.

You have contributed to the work in ICRP, NEA and IAEA – you were chairing RASSC - the Radiation Safety Standards Committee from 2005 to 2011 in the very challenging period during the review and revision the IAEA-BSS (Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources: International Basic Safety Standards GSR part 3). From 2012 you have been a very active chair of HERCA – Heads of the European Radiological protection Competent Authorities - which under your chairmanship has grown to a very important international forum working securing European collaboration among regulators – I could go on – but….

…we want to listen to your lecture with the title “Nordic co-operation in an international context” 

 –  which is an honor and obligation for the prize winner.
